SD-7 makes a good point. Only a group of authoritarians would view the people as a weakening factor in government.
For research and my take on the "new light" portion of that same talk:
a relative of mine recently asked me to comment on what was said in the final talk at the latest convention.
i obviously didn't attend the convention, but i was able to get hold of a recording.
here is a transcript from a recording of the final talk, entitled god's kingdom will crush all other kingdoms - when?

i've just read at a spanish forum for ex-jw that the wt has cooked a new light article series about social celebrations, including birthdays and aniversaries.
according to a member of this forum 'in short' the wt will let witnesses to decide by 'their bible trained conscience' either they celebrate birthdays or not.
is this rumor based in some real facts or it's just bullshit?.
I could see them adding holiday and birthday celebrations to the auto-DA list to save the elders from having to form a judicial committee. I can't see them ever allowing them. That way they could say the same thing they do about blood transfusions: JWs are not punished for it.
if this has been discussed, my apologies.. why all the symposiums??
big part of the district conventions this year, more than any other.. just curious what your thoughts are..
It takes a really good speaker to keep people's attention for 45 minutes or more.
With a symposium, the audience gets awakened by the applause between speakers every 10-15 minutes.
ive recently decided not to be a witness anymore and at the age of 28 was still so afraid to tell my parents.
the truth is their life and knew i would hurt them.
ive had such a battle with the elders and because my dad is an elder its even worse.
Hello and welcome! I would recommend the same two books LeavingWT recommended. Also, keep us posted on your progress. We're here for you!
obviously 607 is a problem, watchower coming out full forces on this one in the latest public edition.. http://download.jw.org/files/media_magazines/wp_e_20111001.pdf.
Also an entire book, great as it might be, isn't a handy and easily-referenced summary.

found this new statesman article linked in a sam harris tweet.
it is a collection of comments on reasons for non-belief from such ones as richard dawkins, daniel dennett, sam harris, jerry coyne and stephen hawking...to name a few.. what caught my eye about the tweet was this comment by harris, his actual tweet:.
I would prefer we keep this thread on topic but I have little doubt that it is going to end up being all about Shelby.
i'm wondering what you all think..
Because of blood issue alone,,I think most agencies will not accept JWs as good candidates for this.
That's what I would think but I know JDubs who have adopted successfully and others who are foster parents. Band on the Run shared an example of lazy JWs who could work but would rather take in our tax money for sheltering and attempting to indoctrinate the youth of our society.
Raising a child in a cult is emotional and psychological abuse.
Letting them die rather than get a blood transfusion is murder, IMO.
I love ProdigalSon's comment. They shouldn't be allowed to breed their own kids. It would be comical if not so sad and true.

I think he's saying that science and faith are two different models - faith being based on human behavior (which somehow he manages to exclude from science), and therefore science does not address the "God" issue.

I didn't want this to have to become a discussion on "what is a cult?" We've had those. I figured this is JWN and everyone knows than "cult" = JWs.
My bad for not being specific enough.
Should Jehovah's Witnesses be allowed to adopt or be foster parents?
